Master Class

Master Class: First Steps Into Video Editing with Marcel Montealegre

This week we began our first two lessons in video editing and post-production with Marcel Montealegre, who has years of experience working on MasterChef España and MasterChef Kids. It was my first ever time being introduced with editing, post-production, and AVID Media Composer. Even though we are only at the beginning of the module, it has already positively surprised me with how much I enjoyed these two classes.

Lesson One: Understanding the Basics

Our first class focused mainly on theory. Marcel explained the foundations of editing, how professional workflows are structured, and what makes an edit clear, dynamic, and effective.

We discussed how editors view storytelling, and what to look for when selecting clips. It was a lot of information, but explained in a way that actually made sense, even for someone who has never edited a video before.

Lesson Two: From Theory to Practice

In the second class we moved from theory to hands-on practice. Marcel gave us raw match footage from Girona vs. Real Madrid, and we worked step by step through the process that professional editors use. Because AVID is used in the sports world and on big cinema projects like Wicked.

We started by creating our own profile inside AVID Media Composer, then learned how to cut, trim, move, and assemble clips in a working timeline. It was quite technical at first, but once I got the hang of it, it became surprisingly enjoyable.

At the end of the lesson we had to create a short highlight video using the original footage (see below). The final piece had to include the players’ arrival, all the goals and celebrations, and then the replays of those actions. It sounds simple when you describe it, but piecing everything together in a clean, logical way was definitely more challenging than expected.

The video on the left side is the original footage, where we cut and paste from. The video on the right side, is my final highlight video of the match after the instructions from Marcel.

Looking Ahead

We will have a total of seven lessons with Marcel, along with graded assignments, so there is a lot more to learn. Even though these first classes were only the basics, I already found the process super interesting. Editing is something I had never tried before, and it feels like a skill that could become very useful in future projects.

I will be sharing more updates on this editing journey here as we get further into post-production and start working on more advanced tasks.
