Pre-Match: Tension, Noise, and Second Leg Pressure
Champions League knock-out nights are never quiet or boring, but this one felt different even before kick-off.
After the first leg in Lisbon, Real Madrid came into the second leg with a narrow advantage, but nothing comfortable. Benfica arrived in Madrid knowing they had nothing to lose, and that mindset was visible from the very first whistle.
The tension from the first leg with the situation surrounding Vini was still very fresh on people their minds. The whole Bernabéu was in loud support of their squad and Vini. But this did not stop the loud Portuguese crowd in the away stands.
This was not going to be a calm night.
First Half: Benfica Strike First
The stadium was loud. Not just loud, relentless. Benfica fans did not stop for a second.
From the start, Benfica controlled possession. Their defensive line was pushed high up the pitch, making it difficult for Real Madrid to build calmly from the back. Every time Vinícius touched the ball, the volume from the away end spiked even higher.
The first real warning came in the 5th minute with a shot from Rafa Silva. Real Madrid looked uncomfortable. Benfica were pressing aggressively and refusing to sit back.
Then in the 13th minute, disaster for Madrid. A miscommunication in defence allowed Rafa Silva to score. 0–1 on the night, and suddenly it’s a tie. The pressure lasted only two minutes.
In the 15th minute, Aurélien Tchouaméni responded with a powerful finish from inside the box to make it 1–1. The Bernabéu exploded. Just like that, Madrid were back in control of the tie.
The game became more balanced after that. Arda Güler thought he had made it 2–1 in the 32nd minute, but VAR ruled it offside. The noise in the stadium never dropped. Not for a second.
At halftime, it remained 1–1. But nothing was decided yet.
Second Half: Chaos, Injuries, and the Decisive Moment
The second half began with the same intensity. Otamendi received a yellow card early on after pushing Vinícius and then tackling Tchouaméni. Asencio followed with a booking in the 56th minute. The physicality increased, and so did the tension.
Benfica began applying pressure again. They needed one goal to push the tie further, and Madrid’s defence started to feel it.
With 20 minutes left, Rüdiger went down after a collision. Shortly after, both Camavinga and Raúl Asencio required medical attention. Camavinga recovered, but Asencio had to leave the pitch on a stretcher with a neck brace. A worrying moment that silenced the stadium for the first time all night.
In the 76th minute, substitutions followed. Mastantuono and Alaba entered the pitch.
Then came the decisive moment. In the 79th minute, Valverde delivered the assist and Vinícius finished calmly. 2–1. The Bernabéu erupted. After all the noise surrounding him, that goal felt personal.
With ten minutes remaining and a lead of 3–1, Madrid controlled the final phase. Young Castilla players Thiago and Palacios were introduced, marking their first Champions League appearance for the first team.
Nine minutes of added time followed after the injury stoppages. Benfica pushed, but it was not enough.
Final score: 2–1. Real Madrid advance to the next round.
